I figured Cassandra should be non-human, so she fits in a little better with this fantasy setting, and I figured if Inara is an orc then she should be an elf to contrast. However, the decision to make her a drow didn't occur to me until I was trying to design an elven, but ultimately simple-looking outfit for her to wear. I remembered that Drow have a lot of spider symbolism, plus the purple skin would make her more visually interesting so she stands out still while surrounded by orcs and catgirls.
