This page is going up a few hours later than usual for me, because I made a point of seeing Dr. Strange earlier today. I really enjoyed it! The visuals alone were worth seeing it in theaters... my wife gets a headache from 3D, so I saw it in 2D, but it seems like one of the rare movies that would legitimately benefit from the experience. The story was good, but unfortunately although the setting is new and exciting, the story beats are very standard Marvel... right down to "floating portal in the sky that will destroy everything". Is there a name for that yet? I'll have to check TV Tropes...

Still, Cumberbatch is incredibly charming as Dr. Strange... Marvel has a knack for writing loveable asshole characters who grow into heroes but also stay sarcastic throughout. I feel like there was just a touch too much humor... most of it felt natural, but there were one or two moments that felt forced.

IMDB rates the film at about an 8/10, and I think that's a pretty fair assesment... maybe down to a 7 if you're tired of the Marvel formula by now. Marvel still can't seem to come up with a compelling villain, though.
