When I saw the first trailer for Ready Player One I was kind of excited... I had heard good things about the book and it was cool to see the Iron Giant. But seeing all the promotional material I just... I can't. I think that I'm the type of person who generally likes to be pandered to in films... I like when characters say their catchphrase, or when I see Easter Eggs for other movies in the background. But this level of pandering is just too much... it feels like I'm just trying to be sold toys. Which, to be fair, most movies I go to see are probably mostly about selling merchandise, but I prefer when that's not the first thing that comes to mind. It's just so blatant that it kind of feels like I'm being made fun of.

The only reason I'm at all interested in seeing the movie is b/c of Steven Spielberg is directing it. I probably won't like it though, they seem to have changed the plot to make it more about a war in cyberspace that a treasure hunt. You should totally check out the book if you have time though.

The book is just a wall of name drops strung together in a deliberately cliche plot. The movie might be nearly unrelated but otherwise it's unlikely to be any good.
