Dr. Sharktopus has mostly retired from the comic to focus on his personal life, but it was talking with him about the comic that solidified  our take on how magic works within the context of this world. For the mind control system he actually shared with me a comic he had found that summarized how he thought it should work... it was a comic where this guy had a phone app that allowed him to mind control his mom. The important part was that she retained her strict attitude... she just did lots of lewd things without seeming to realize it. I'm sure someone in the comments probably knows the name of the comic, but I'm honestly terrible at remembering things like that.
