Re: stand out fit in I don’t know a lot about what the character at the end of the music video represents culturally but I know that my first time through I didn’t notice that in that dance sequence the main character’s appearance swaps from his natural look to blond hair blue eyes When I realized that I was even more floored, it somehow added even more impact to the dance for me I adore this music video and this song

I had to do some digging and process the lyrics to get the music video better. Stand Out Fit In, when you read the lyrics, is about contradictions. Most lines reflect this and they don't make much sense if you don't use that lens. It's a commentary on how society asks us both to stand out and be ourselves to make people like us more than others, but also to conform to expectations and be like everyone else (or what society wants us to be) so we don't get ostracized. I don't know what the dancing person in the traditional clothing at the end represents culturally, but they seem to contrast the urban american setting and who this kid has become as he conformed to his American highschool crowd. The blonde hair and blue eyes he gains at the end probably serves to contrast even stronger with the dancer that he begins to mimic and mirror this cultural divide he feels torn between. I believe at the end he seems to have grappled with and accepted these two sides of him and in the same location he has found who he always was (represented by him as an unchanged child). He also reconnects with his mother in a way he didn't seem to before.
