Background

Generally, the dead of Samarahd are cremated as burial in the ever-shifting sands is not possible. However, entombment in the Valley of Tombs is reserved for a special few favoured sons and daughters of the city.

The Temple of Judgement stands at the entrance to the Valley of Tombs. The bodies of those who are to be laid to rest in the Valley are first placed in this temple for seven days, during which time they are judged by both the people and the gods. If they are considered worthy by both, a parade is held in their honour before their body is carried into the valley where they may rest for eternity in the shadow of the mountain.

The temple is also home to the cities Cardinal Law Courts. Matters that cannot be resolved in the Lawmaster’s Court are sent here. Samarahd has as many villains and lawbreakers as any other major city, but the Word of Law as a subject is taken very seriously by its people. Despite centuries passing since the tribes united there are still remnants of rules, both written and spoken, from that time. Many of them are unsurprisingly contradictory, given that they were cobbled together from the cultural history of more than 20 individual groups, and they are still debated rigorously to this day.

Domille of Domille's Woundrous Works has collaborated with me on these maps to create a series of phased exterior battlemaps for the Temple of Judgement! Divine Judgement has come and the fallen has been deemed unworthy.

Her phased maps bring an extra level of excitement and tension to encounters as the battlefield changes in front of the players eyes!

Design Notes

Temple of Judgement 01 Parade

  • 01 – Lobby – After passing through the temple’s solid gold doors, visitors wash their hand and face before entering the interior. Stairs lead up to 07
  • 02 – Hall of Judgement – The bodies of those who are being judged before passing into the Valley of Tombs are laid here for a week. In that time, any citizen can cast their judgement by leaving their mark on a scroll in one of the central chambers four corners. At the end of the week the votes are tallied and, barring any ‘divine intervention’, a decision is made about whether they can be laid to rest with their forefathers.
  • 03 – Cardinal Law Courts – The three Grand Jurats preside over the courts here, dealing with the city’s most important cases. They also debate changes to the city’s laws. Connects to Staircases leading above to 08,13,16 & 19
  • 04 – Antechamber – Stairs lead up to 20
  • 05 – Parade – If the seven day judgement is passed a parade is held in the city to honour the dead. It ends at the Hall of Judgement as the body is carried through the long hall amongst dozens of onlookers to the Valley of Tombs.
  • 06 – City Walls Lower – The City Walls are some of the oldest parts of Samarahd. Many if the newer buildings, like the Temple of Judgement, have been built into or on top of them in places. Stairs lead up to 22

Temple of Judgement 02 Mezzanine

  • 07 – Hall of Judgement Upper – Stairs lead down to 01
  • 08 – Security Office – Security staff not on shift use this room. There is also a small holding cell for criminal defendants who require constraint. Connects to staircase leading down to 03
  • 09 – Junior Lawkeeper’s Offices
  • 10 – Grand Jurats Office
  • 11 – Waiting Room
  • 12 – Grand Jurats Office
  • 13 – Meeting Room – Used by jurors during trials to debate. Connects to staircase leading down to 03
  • 14 – WC
  • 15 – Defendant Meeting Rooms – For use by defendants and their representatives while waiting for trial.
  • 16 – Defendants Waiting Room. Connects to staircase leading down to 03
  • 17 – Law Library
  • 18 – Grand Jurats Office
  • 19 - Meeting Room – Used by jurors during trials to debate. Connects to staircase leading down to 03
  • 20 – Parade Mezzanine – Additional seating to view the parade. Stairs lead down to 04
  • 21 – Lookout Tower – Attacks rarely come from the Valley of Tombs as the only way in or out without climbing the mountain is through the Judgement Gate. However, dangerous creatures have been known to appear from the deeper tombs at times.
  • 22 - City Wall Ramparts – Almost 500 years old, these walls have never been breached.
