Background

Xandria’s Sanctum is a small settlement hundreds of feet above the ground in a grove of ancient Gigaswood trees. It is the spiritual home to a group of mages and druids known as the Arcadium Arborus, who work together to better understand the intrinsic links between nature and magic. Most of the group carry out their studies in far flung reaches of the world, but they all return here regularly to update on another on their findings and ensure their knowledge is safely stored.

The Sanctum is named after the forest spirit who guided Caelum Ouranos, the Arcadium’s founder and head scholar, to the grove over a hundred years ago. Much of the arcane knowledge discovered by the members is only kept here, and if it fell into the wrong hands could be used to do great harm to the world. For this reason, Caelum and Xandria maintain a series of protective spells and illusions over the trees, keeping outsiders from finding them. The only way in or out is via the arcane waypoints, which are connected to magical pendants carried by the rest of the Arcadium.

The trees here are evergreen, even in winter, although for a couple of weeks around the harvest moon every year the leaves turn to brilliant shades of orange, red and gold. All of the members of the Arcadium usually return around this time for an annual gathering. This is also the time when nature and magic are most intertwined in the grove and strange things can happen.
