The animation got worse because its "to the top" animation. The animation studio changed from season 3 onwards, so from now on, I.G. productions animates haikyuu!. Much like when MAPPA adopted AoT and the CGI on titans looked ugly. This means the animation style is closer to the manga designs (soon you'll see the new designs for the karasuno guys (new hinata, Kageyama...)) and its FAR WORSE. The animation is noticeably worse from here, and it sacrifices quality for impact shots. In previous seasons you could predict if a ball was in or out just by looking at its trajectory before watching it land; but now even trajectory of the ball getting out of setter's hand look more sketchy. Such a shame, but you'll have to get used to it and move on.

I love the Haikyuu OVAs. They add so much context, raise the stakes and make the anime feel that much more like it’s a living breathing world, where even if we’re not focusing on our main team, the world around them is still moving on too. Also, I would get used to this level of animation because when I say season 3 is peak, I meant it. It takes some time getting used to the choppy style going forward. Story is still great though

here's the thing: while yes, often, OVAs are more like "special" episodes that don't really relate to the main story a lot, that's not always the case. these ones are actually adaptations of the manga chapters 196-206(? somewhere around there), so they're FULLY canon. though they really didn't do well by trying to squeeze those 10ish chapters into 2 episodes, so i'd still suggest actually reading those chapters, even if it's just on your own. the easiest way to clear these things up would be to just ask, make a poll or something so you don't end up missing things. that being said, there's still that one 6-minute aoba johsai ending scene from one of the movies that people have been telling you to watch. i don't recall you having uploaded or talked about it & who knows if you'll still do it at this point if not, but here's the link anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lao54_hFaA0

separate comment for this bc why the hell not! funnily enough, nohebi DIDN'T actually cheat. that's their whole point. they're not breaking any rules, just taking advantage of the circumstances in any way they can - trashtalking, sucking up to the refs, blocking the view of the ball, etc. something that they for some reason didn't include in the OVAs was that at the end, kuroo actually went and stood up for that team, acknowledging that they're very skilled & intelligent, and mocking anyone thinking that "cheating" is all they're good at...so, basically you, lmao

I prefer the fluidity and dynamic shots of S1-3, but I actually like the art style of To The Top more. I'm hoping the movie will be a blend of the two!

Season 4 cour 2 did have wonky faces and bodies and a single bad animation of a jump float serve to Nishinoya, the season is otherwise fine. Not to mention there's way worse animation out there, lol

Didnt mean to say that new designs are bad or worse, they ARE just different. What I'm trying to say is that the quality of the CGI on the ball, heck, literally what the anime has most of, is very sketchy. It looks very artificial, in comparison to seasons 1-3, and that's not my opinion, it's just done much more poorly than the clarity and meticulosity from the previous animation studio. If the ball physics were the same, I would have literally zero complaints. I much rather have s1 animation (although its 2014 animation, with much worse finishes, but having perfect ball physics, because it takes me out of the game), that of course, its just my opinion. I will say tho, new designs and close ups on hands/bokuto spike in the ova are beautiful.

you can't get this far by using dirty tricks alone though. as i said, they simply took advantage of the situation. was it a cheap move? sure, but making use of all the loopholes they can find also shows how smart & crafty nohebi is. if that specific instance of them making the "out" call was against the rules, literally anyone on the field could & should have called it out, but they didn't.
