Gintama is an amazing anime. They have 90% comedy, and it's fcking hilarious, the rest of the 10% is AMAZING content as well. They often break the 4th wall, they have a fuckton of references to other anime/manga. But Gintama's jokes can often be built up and needs context. So I think if you instead watched a random gintama episode, it would work out much better.

It's a running joke, and Gintoki often comments that if he changes his name to Kintoki, the manga will get canceled. I love the puns and stupid, yet somehow still clever jokes in this show
