Chapter 1775: Sister Should Accompany Brother in Death

For the next half of the day, Shu Yu continued to stand guard on the city wall until Inspector Yin came to relieve her. Exhausted, she returned to the Meng Family Escort Agency.

After a nap in her room, Shu Yu woke up to hear Xia Yan rushing in, saying, "Second Miss, Master Wu has been captured. General Huang has taken down all those rebels."

Shu Yu's face brightened. "Really?"

"Yep." Xia Yan nodded repeatedly. "General Huang sent word, apologizing for startling you. Yesterday, Master Wu attempted a desperate attack, leading the rebels to target the villages outside the city. Fortunately, General Huang was well-prepared and had already arranged for his people to defend the villages. However, some areas were left vulnerable, which is why a small group of rebels ended up coming our way."

When the rebels attacked the villages, apart from the pitfalls that the villagers had dug on their own initiative, there were no other obstacles.

With the city walls and gates still closed, there was no way they could break in unless they mounted a full-scale attack.

Hence, General Huang had to deal with the nearby villages first.

Luckily, now that the rebels were defeated, once the aftermath was sorted out, things would return to normal in Chenggu County.

Feeling relieved, Shu Yu slowly freshened up and had something to eat.

When she arrived at the flower hall, she coincidentally saw Tao Shi. The latter walked dazedly, nearly colliding with her.

Quickly sidestepping to avoid a collision, Shu Yu steadied herself before looking at Tao Shi. The latter seemed to finally snap out of it, though her reaction was a little delayed. She nodded at Shu Yu and continued walking.

Shu Yu blinked and asked the person next to her, Ying Xi, "What happened?"

Ying Xi shook her head. Since she had been following Shu Yu, she had no idea what had happened to Tao Shi.

At that moment, Meng Han ran over. Shu Yu stopped her and glanced in Tao Shi's direction, furrowing her brow. "What's going on? You went to the Tao family to handle Tao Fei's affairs yesterday. What happened?"

Meng Han was quite angry as she recounted, "We went to pay our respects to Uncle yesterday by lighting incense for him. However, when we arrived at the Tao residence, Aunt kept the door shut, not letting us in. The neighbors were pointing and whispering about us. I don't know what rumors Aunt has been spreading, but it's led everyone to accuse us of being heartless. Later, when Lu Wu and the others brought Uncle's body back, Aunt opened the door. We wanted to perform the memorial ceremony, but Aunt cried and drove us away. We anticipated this, so it wasn't surprising. But who could have imagined that my ten-year-old cousin would suddenly rush out with a pair of scissors, saying that my mother should accompany Uncle in death?"

At that moment, everyone was stunned. However, Zhang Shi's son didn't care. He was even quite resolute, claiming that Tao Shi should accompany Tao Feili in death. After all, she was his sister. When their father was alive, she had to take care of him. Now that their father had passed away, of course, she should go down with him to look after him.

Everyone who had come to the Tao residence was taken aback, and the neighbors were equally shocked by his words.

Even Tao Shi couldn't believe it. Meng Qi immediately snatched the scissors from the boy's hand, scolded him, and warned him not to speak recklessly.

The boy had been hurt by Meng Qi's actions and was scolded. He started wailing, cursing Meng Qi, cursing Meng Han, and most venomously, cursing Tao Shi, the one who had always loved him the most.

He claimed that his parents had said that Tao Shi should serve as a workhorse for the Tao family. He said Tao Shi was useless and couldn't even manage the family's assets properly. He called Tao Shi a big idiot who didn't care for her own daughter and treated her nephew and niece better than her own children. He even said that in the future, Tao Shi would be tricked into giving the entire Meng family to the Tao family, all thanks to him, Tao Feili.
