Many viewers can simply say that they would never risk their life for any amount of money. But placing ourselves in the characters' situations, we can see that they're too far into dept, or have terrible living situations. The games are their last hope of survival. In a way, the show portrays their very lives as a possible game. One more wrong move, and they're dead.
