When a person gives up ownership of the death note all memories of the death note are completely wiped, but only the death note specifically. Like if you met someone because of the death note then you would still remember that person and meeting them, but the aspect of the death note would be removed from that meeting to where you met them for some other reason. So you still have all of your memories of everything that has happened, there is just no memory of the existence of a death note. And yea L is mostly confused because now they're not even acting like people concerned with proving their innocence, whether they're guilty or not. Even innocent people will refuse to talk to police without a lawyer because they are careful with what they say, but Light and especially Misa are now not even doing that. This is why he found it weird that Misa openly admitted to knowing Light and worshiping Kira, because even if she was innocent this could still be used to falsely convict her which is why she would be more reserved about it no matter what. To L, they seem to be emotionally panicking to the point where they probably couldn't form a good lie -- like an innocent person desperately pleading because they don't even know what's going on.
