Hello to all Shred Guitar Community members, hope you had a great start into 2020 this week! I'm happy to share this picking lesson with you today :)

Since I only had a nylon acoustic guitar in Colombia I had to spend some time to get my alternate picking back into shape this week. I came up with 2 exercises that really pushed me hard and I'm back on track and even better than before.

The secret here is combining different hand motions/tempos in just one exercise - that way we save a lot of time in our routine and further train the switching between different groups. All students that also have my course '10 Steps to Modern Shredding' will have experienced that this is quite hard :)

Hi Bernth! Thanks a lot for posting this exercise. I have been doing it regularly for a short while now and am already seeing good progress. That said, could you upload the exercise tracks in 80bpm and 90 bpm as well here? While I am more than OK with 70bpm, I am not quite comfortable yet with 100bpm. Would be great to have something in the middle too as "stepping stone" :-). Thanks, Paul.

Hi Bernth awesome exercise thank you so much 😊 but I have a curious question for exercise one the third group of notes that are played on the 4th fret of every string are they sextuplets? Cuz when I try to count six notes per beat on the metronome and play, it would have a different feeling from what you have there I hope you got my point so what the deal there ? 😃

Hi Bernth, Awesome exercise but Hard to manage at 100 bpm. I'm pretty confortable at 70bpm but with the speed, not sure that the count is good (particularly the triple)...Generally, I'm stuck around 80 bpm for all the practical exercise... I don't know why...

Hey Anas, sorry for getting back to you so late! Yes, you can also count in groups of 6 right here, that also works very well! It doesn't make a difference as long as you don't heavily accent the groups you are thinking in. So use the system that makes it easier for you to stay in time :)

Hey Kevin, this one is pretty hard, please give it some time! Working with so many different rhythmic groups can be very confusing, when you mainly want to work on your tempo I'd recommend working with eighth notes and eighth notes triplets - or eighth notes and sixteenth notes! By reducing it to 2 groups it will be a bit easier in the beginning. Hope that helps a bit :)

i got a question. been doing this exercise almost every day. on https://www.metronomeonline.com/ let say i start on 72bpm, then i move to 80 then come back to 76 then up to 84 then 80 then 88 etc its a perfect work out. around 92 i get screwed up.cant go any faster and its not even clean. my biggest problem is my B string(i got a 7 string guit.) its like i can't hear it. those 16 notes are way to fast. i can't really hear if i'm on cue except when i start the triplets if i don't start on the down i know i miss a note somewhere. any more trick on how to be able to move to 100bpm? its funny, when i do it WITH you i seem to be on time. from 80 to 100bpm seem impossible.especially the 16 notes. any tricks to be able to hear it especially on my B string on my 7 strings. funny, when i play it at the same time as you, i seem to nail it at 100bpm. lol

Hey Karlo, thanks for sharing that - I'm really happy to read that you work on this exercise so much :) It's a tough one! I can give you more detailed feedback if you could send me some video footage via email, I'd love to see that if you want a closer analysis. I know very well about those peaks/changes in the technique - at some tempos it feels like you hit a wall and your technique doesn't work anymore. Usually, you have to adjust minor details - the fast motion is different from the slow motion and the tempo between that is the most challenging with certain exercises/techniques I think :)

Yep! I am gonna be on 70 bpm for a while! That fast to triplet is kicking my butt!

hi Bernth, I'm currently practicing a lot of the second exercise, but I feel like my left hand position is limiting my speed during the fast section, I can't get a good sync on my hands at 70bpm. You see It just feel uncomfortable getting the palm far from the neck as you do. Do you have any tips to fix that ? Thanks :)

The one left-hand exercise I found the most helpful so far is this one: https://www.patreon.com/posts/81-this-exercise-36806443 I also see that you watched the first left-hand technique tutorial, the classic 'spider exercise' is a great starting point (taking the speed aspect of this video away, just focusing on the fingers/wrist/hand) - you can always send me some video footage so I can give more detailed feedback :) Hope you have a great day!
