I agree with Steph, the story is what makes undead unluck so good. I will say though, I know you said that the characters are okay for now, but through the course of the story when you start getting more characterization and character development, you start to appreciate a lot of the characters. And I wouldn't be surprised if the characters become your motivation to watching the show more than the story.
