Crocodile said the beasts in Impel Down were awakened Zoans but we had no idea what that meant back then, and tbh even now we barely know lol. My theory is for Zoan fruits, since they have a will of their own, they can either take over your mind if certain conditions are met or let you use their full power if you align with them. I think Luffy's desire for freedom, fighting for the freedom of Wano etc, probably resonated with the fruit as Nika was supposedly a warrior of liberation, and so instead of it taking over his body or letting him die, it saw Luffy was willing to die fighting for freedom and was like, its awakening time boiii

Think about this btw. Luffy's devil fruit is the reason why Nami, Kidd, Law and others had their eyes popping out. It effects those around him. It is like a "toon world".

Awakened zoans have their forms buffed with speed and strength massively and can be recognized by the puff of smoke around their necks like a scarf, depending on the zoan they can effect their surrounding but thats probably only mythical zoans who have a ability attached to their transformation, like a regular bull woudlnt have a ability to effect surroundings but a mythical animal like yammato would, While awakened logias can literally change the enviorment, like aokiji and akainu tunring punk hahzard into a hot vs cold enviorment, paramecias can do a bit of both
