The plan to fake Laenor's death was apart of Daemon and Rhaenyra's plan. The person they show Daemon choke from behind is the body that they used in the fire.

Now it's getting spicy! But yeah, as everyone else is commenting, this was all Daemon, Rhaenyra, Laenor, and Ser Qarl's plan... we know this because Daemon kills a random dude, so that they can use him to fake Laenor's death. But I think the important thing is Rhaenyra and Daemon's conversation that's narrated while this is happening---Rhaenyra wants to be a good queen that is loved by her subjects, but Daemon points out the importance of being feared and respected. The whole plan is a compromise between those two viewpoints: They "kill off" Laenor, but Rhaenyra frees Laenor from this game of thrones, a person she respects and does genuinely care for (hence their wholesome heart-to-heart moment, a couple scenes before). I really think this is important because, as you were discussing during the episode, the audience is torn between who to root for between Team Alicent and Team Rhaenyra. I'm of the opinion that Rhaenyra faking Laenor's death and not truly being a deplorable character to the audience, is how the showrunners endear her to the audience and set her as the protagonist. Meanwhile, Alicent just accepts creepy Larys' help on the boat, but makes it clear that it's under her terms. Alicent is starting to play dirty and she has Larys and her dad Otto on her side, two people that a lot of audience members HATE. So Rhaenyra is seen as the protagonist. Not necessarily the "good guy", because she obviously has huge shortcomings, but the protagonist.

House of The Dragons is too good, and it only goes up from here. Two more episodes btw. Too bad we have to wait till next year for season 2(when they start filming)
