Ep 1 was brilliant to establish Cid, by showing of Nishino. She was shown as the Important Character while Cid was treated as the Background Character. Which is exactly what he wants to be, which is why everything about him is ordinary and why he had average school grades. But behind that facade he was the Stylish Ruffian Slayer and now is Shadow. And that's why he couldn't remember her name and why he never looked at her properly, because he thought she was just some Character. Only when she got kindapped he realized that she was a Important Character. And then the next day he did remember her correct name and looked at her properly. So yeah I think Ep 1 is brilliant and makes it already pretty unique as a introduction Episode. And like Nardoc said, the ''I made everything up'' he said in his mind to himself. But the Girls belief that Story, and at the end of Ep 2 it turns out to be true, when the Guy was facing off against Alpha and said how they found out about the Secret of the ''Cult of Diablos''. While you can also see that Cid/Shadow think that it's just some random Bandits. Since he said ''I guess when these girls get involved, even regular old bandits can instantly transform into the members of the cult.'' or at the end ''For a Bandit he was pretty strong.'' And he thinks that the Girls just play along, which is why he said that Beta deservers a Academy Award. So yeah, I think it's just funny how Shadows just makes stuff up and by coincidence is right. Same with the Map, where he missed the mark he wanted to hit and Beta is just like "there is nothing... oh, Shadow knows that there is a secret hidout" But yeah, it's gonna be good, this Anime just gets better.

It doesn't ever explain this in the anime but does in the LN at this point in the story but they use slime swords and armour as its most efficient conduit when they use their magic

Because he just made it up, and he thinks that they are not that gullible to believe a story like that.
