The actor playing Homelander Antony Starr, is perfectly made for this role, he is seriously so scary. I think this show is his biggest yet but I loved him in Banshee.

The Homelander speaking back to Edgar is not a Heroic scene, as always there's a reason behind those actions. He kept saying "Family" which deep down he does want, but here it's not about that, He's trying to go against Edgar and Show that he's the top dog...that whole speech was targeted towards taking some control away from Edgar, these are mental games of the 1%

Another clarification, The whole end sequence is trying to show you that Stormfront is racist, her name in fact "Stormfront" is the name for a Neo-Nazi website. She killed those people because they were of a certain race, and called Kimiko's brother "Yellow Bastard". [Sidenote, remember Edgar is the one who put Stormfront in "The Seven", this shows how much he's ahead of Homelander, she very likely stole the kill to take the spotlight from Homelander on Edgars orders, showing Homelander that he's replaceable.]
