I can’t recall the exact wording, but the anime has Kiyotaka come off much more cold in the final scenes with Kei compared to the books, the end of that scene had him genuinely reflecting on how at the very least he does enjoy her company. The anime in general has him come off way more emotionless than the novels, his rejection to Sato was way meaner in the anime compared to the novel as well, he at least tried to let her down somewhat gently in the book lol

Thank your reaction.

In line with what Kollie mentioned, the adaptation, while great in some areas, fails to show Ayanokojis humanity in some moments, which is especially shown in the final moments of his fight with ryuen, as he is saving kei. Not sure where the anime will go, but I hope they bring this back around for the last season of year 1.

Personally, I think Ayanokoji is hoping Horikita will surpass being just a tool, He uses her as a tool but unlike Karuizawa he actually tries to have Horikita improve. I assume he sees potential in her vs the others, for most of them he seems to try and lock them in as effective tools instead of nurturing growth.

A shame the anime fails to show that he truly does have emotions there, he just doesn't show them or express them at all. His emotions is expressed through curiosity, more than anything. He's a tragic victim of whatever The White Room did to him. His closed off, cold and ruthless mindset is a defense mechanism that he developed as a result of his upbringing. "Do whatever it takes to survive, use any tool to be the winner." To place his own self preservation above anything else. As long as I'm safe, nothing else matters. What is his goals? I believe the very first scene of season 1 established it. What is morality? True equality? What does it mean to be truly free?
