We take a BREATH after the Team W vs. Team Z game, but there's no time to relax as the stakes are RAISED and our team MUST beat Team V to advance to the Second Selection!  

With tensions high the night before the final match, Isagi questions how to make his weapon work, sees familiar faces, and we get backstory on our Team V main duo: Reo and Nagi! All I can say is: I'm officially captaining more ships and I cannot WAIT to see what's going to happen next!

Great reaction and discussion!! Abut KNB comparisons! Yeah, I also did get the vibe that Reo is like love child of Kise and Akashi! Rich boy who gets everything but the thing he wants the most and also very bored of life. From Nagi I got the Mura plus Aomine vibes! Very lazy and can do anything he sets up to do, monster in terms of how much talent he has. fhbchebvuhb I will never get over how the interaction between Barou and Isagi went in this episode: Barou: "Insults the living shit out of Isagi, crushes him completely, does literally nothing to help Isagi other than score some goals on him" Isagi: He is sooo cool!! Its just so funny XDD There is no word for word translation to english of the word Barou uses to describes Isagi but "hetakuso" basically means "talentless piece of shit". I have no idea why they translated it to donkey XDD I loove Reo and Nagi! I ship them so hard and its nice that you finally got to meet them and see their personalities!! They are really fun characters!! VA fun facts!! This episode we had another overlap with jjk! Reo's mother was voiced by the same person who voices Fushiguro's sister, Tsumiki!

Loved the reaction and discussion! I’m living for these KNB references. It was impossible for me too to not make every KNB (and other anime) comparison while watching BLLK. I’ve seen some people say BLLK is the “KNB of soccer” or “KNB’s spiritual successor.” So you’re definitely not alone in that. YESS the Akashi parallels. While I was watching your KNB reactions, I was getting slightly worried that you’d be put off by some of the characters in BLLK because of the negative portrayal of some of these traits in KNB, but I’m happy to see that you’re enjoying the characters so far! Your comparison of Reonagi’s dynamic with other pairs was so fun to hear! When ep 8 aired, I rewatched Reo’s flashback so many times, so I have a lot of thoughts and I hope you don’t mind my ramble. I can see how you thought Reo sounded like Nagisa there in the locker room with Nagi and Zantetsu, he sounded so innocent and happy, which is a contrast to how crude and sharp-tongued he sounded when he was talking to Kuon and Team Z. It was a while ago, but we actually saw a shot of Reo and Nagi together in the same school uniform in ep 1! Their uniform reminds me of the uniform for Shiratorizawa, another private school. Reo getting Nagi into soccer reminds me of how Kuroo got Kenma into volleyball, and Nagi being like Kenma who’s lazy and plays on his phone. The orange and pink hues and the filter and washed border of the flashback of Reonagi’s meet-cute was so soft and beautiful. It really was a textbook romantic first encounter—A character accidentally bumps into another character, making them drop their stuff, and it was love at first sight. It reminded me SO MUCH of Uenoyama and Mafuyu’s first meeting where Ueneoyama (who has the same VA as Reo) finds Mafuyu alone on the stairs (like Nagi on the stairs), and then Uenoyama discovered Mafuyu’s hidden singing talent like how Reo discovered Nagi’s soccer talent! Reo and Nagi are opposite in many ways, but I like how they share the similarity of being bored with their lives and how they’re isolated from others in a way. I feel like Nagi’s lazy attitude and lack of ambition in this highly prestigious prep school alienated him from his peers, which explains why he’s alone on the stairs. Even though Reo is extremely rich, popular, and surrounded by his classmates, Reo isn’t satisfied since this was all just given to him because of his background. Because of this, I see Reo as Nagi’s first ever friend, and Nagi as Reo’s first true friend. Reo could’ve easily started the conversation off with bribing Nagi with the offer of money or special treatment since he has the resources, but I love that Reo tried to earn Nagi’s cooperation by genuinely praising his talent and hyping up the prospect of going pro in soccer. It goes with his mentality of using his own effort to get what he wants. I have so much respect for Reo. My favorite part of their meet-cute was when Reo said to Nagi, “You’re fine the way you are. Let’s play soccer!” I feel like this was what got through to Nagi and convinced him to go along with Reo. I have the feeling that Nagi is used to being told by others to change his lazy attitude, but then Reo comes in and tells him that he accepts him for who he is. There’s nothing more validating than hearing that, and I think Nagi really was affected by that. I love that Reo said “Let’s play soccer!” rather than “Play soccer with me” or “Will you play soccer with me?” It’s not a demanding suggestion or request, it’s an enthusiastic invitation for them to do something *together* and I think it’s beautiful. In the flashback, the “treasure” Reo set his sights on was the World Cup trophy, and during his journey of achieving that treasure, he met Nagi, who we learn that Reo called him his “treasure" in the locker room scene before the flashback started. This is gonna sound so cheesy, but this reminds me of the saying, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey,” with the destination being the World Cup trophy and the journey being Nagi. Reo’s mother is voiced by Saori Hayami who voices Yor (Spy Family) and Shinobu (Demon Slayer)! Fun fact: A Jojo director was in charge of animating the Barou part in this ep! It really explains the art style, anatomy, animation of the muscles, and the poses lol. About the “donkey” translation.. Since donkeys are used as working animals and are of even lower “status” than Barou’s other insults (peasant and commoner), it fits in with the theme of him being a king. And “donkey” is just funny and unique. We’ve actually heard Barou say “hetakuso” multiple times in his introduction in ep 3, but CR translated it as “lousy” and other generic words. Then this episode, they stuck with one translation for his catchphrase. I know the discord clarified about Barou’s age, and similarly, Lemon is not 16, but rather, he is also 18. A lot of anime featuring high schoolers focus on the first years (15/16), but most of the BLLK characters we met so far are actually 17 or 18. I can’t believe I forgot to mention Sakurai (KNB) and Furuya (Daiya) as other roles from Nagi’s VA. I love Nagi and Furuya so much. I feel the same as you about how Nagi’s not arrogant or condescending. His words at the end of the episode, “That was easy. Why couldn’t you do that?” could out-of-context come off as sarcastic and like he’s bragging or dissing Team Z. But similar to Ushijima, I think Nagi was just blunt, speaking his mind, and was genuinely confused. It reminds me a little of younger Ranpo in the flashback arc with Fukuzawa in BSD s4 where Ranpo wasn’t aware that he was a genius and thought everyone was just pretending to be dumb. I love how Nagi jumping forward and catching the ball with his foot and killing its momentum is a call back to when Nagi jumped down the stairs and caught the phone with his foot. We got to see Nagi trap a soccer ball in a similar way to how he caught the phone! A Crunchyroll translation thing. When Nagi caught the phone with his foot, Reo said “Nice control!” in the subtitles, but he said in Japanese, “Nice trap!” Here’s a definition I found online: “In soccer, a trap is stopping and gaining possession of the ball after receiving a pass from a teammate or a misplaced pass from an opponent. ‘Receiving’ or ‘controlling’ the ball is another name for trapping.”

Thank you for the kind words and comment! Yeah, it's so easy to compare to KNB, right?! And yessss, Reo and Nagi's relationship is just the stuff of shipping legends! I am all about it! HAHAHAHA -- RIGHT?! Isagi gets tossed verbally into a dumpster by Barou and he still finds him cool -- oh, Barou -- you are destined for the harem and there's nothing to stop it now! It seriously is hard to NOT make KNB references because there are sooooo many similarities! I could SO see BLLK as the spiritual successor to KNB…at least with characters and shipping! And oddly enough, despite all the character traits similar to Akashi, these characters make it work! I don’t know what that says about Akashi, though, AHAHAHA! I LOVE the Reo flashback!! Their uniforms definitely have a Shiratorizawa vibe! And the Kuroo/Kenma vibes work too! But also THE UENOMAFU DYNAMIC! YES! If Reo was Nagi’s first friend, I am all here for it, but also: AWWWWWWWW! Definitely agree with you in their meeting and how Reo treats Nagi! The way Reo’s “goals” and “objectives” have developed is really cute! Ahhh, that’s so cool about Reo’s mom and her VA! OF COURSE a Jojo director did the Barou part! THE POSES – it explains that! And yeah, the “donkey” translation is just…weird. I grew up on a farm so I know about the practicality of donkeys; it’s just…as Tatianna would say, “a choice!” XD It’s good to note that about the ages! Oohhhhhhhh Nagi is also Furuya and Sakurai?!
