**HEADPHONE WARNING**

Oh friends, dear friends -- we kick off the inaugural "JanuYaoi" series with a BANG!

This OVA from ol' 1998 is actually...really good. I had NO CLUE what to expect going in, but two New York cops on an anything-but-platonic vacation stumble across a dead body and their vacation becomes an off-duty romp, as duo tries to solve the mystery while one of them tries to woo his partner!

After watching, I HAD to read the 7-Volume manga series and talk about it as well in this video! I definitely recommend this retro throwback and I'm excited to talk about it with you all! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

FYI, Dee's VA is the same VA for Panda (JJK) and JJ's VA also voiced Might Guy from Naruto. Sent links to Fake 2 and the Spin off Ra-i via patreon.

Thank you for the links and that is AMAZING that Dee's VA is Panda! As if I needed another reason to rewatch JJK! Haha!

2022-02-02 13:41:15 Wow, Fake is an oldie I forgot about. A good choice (and a fairly tame one, lol) to start off Januyaoi. I'm kinda worried about what you'll end up with for next week, haha, because there are some you'll find *very* problematic if you were uncomfortable with Dee's touchy-feely parts. I'm hoping you'll do Haru wo Daiteita/Embracing Love (2005, 2 OVAs) which is an incredibly long manga series but only got the two OVAs (and a sort of spinoff with Fuyu no Semi/Winter Cicada OVAs). I never got around to reading all of Fake, though I did read the last volume just because I wanted to see them get together for real. It was wonderfully done. Dee is such a romantic - a big, goofy puppy with a very good heart and nothing but love and respect for Ryo. Ryo takes his time to figure out what he really wants but you know that means he will be all-in once he makes up his mind. It was worth waiting for, for both of them. I wonder if the mangaka chose NYC as the setting partially because being gay in a big city in the USA was much less taboo than it would be in Japan. I think a lot of "yaoi tropes" (which really are just romance tropes if you read Japanese smutty romance manga or have read English bodice-rippers in the 80s) are tied to Japanese culture. If you ever have the time to read a book (well, a book in two parts) then give In the Dark by Jin Shisi Chai a try. It's about a Chinese cop who once went deep undercover with a drug lord, came back, and is now a detective. He meets an eccentric forensic sketch artist (this is a BL) and they become a duo. Mixed in with them solving cases are some very strange hints about both characters' backstories. It feels very crime noir, the Chinese setting is cool, and it's BL and fairly open (for a Chinese story) about their relationship though the sex is offscreen they do quite often kiss and show deep affection for each other. Yeah, I was surprised with how "tame" this first entry was, but I actually really loved it (despite Dee's initial touchy-feely-ness....but his character warmed up to me, so it's fine, now). That is good to know about Embracing love, though!! The whole manga of Fake has some really sweet moments, but yeah, it all accumulates in them coming together at the end, but is really well done! DEFINITELY worth the wait in my mind, too! And that very well could be why the mangaka picked NYC, because everyone in the story is so open-minded and like, "YUP. These two idiots are together, of course." :) In the Dark! Ooohhhh, nice!! Thank you so much for the link and the suggestion!! :D :D

JanuYAOI Yey! Love to see it. I enjoyed the OVA but the manga sounds much better so I’ll definitely read it - thanks for not going into too many spoilers haha. Excited about next week

romaniablack

Oh, I DEFINITELY recommend the initial Fake series; fun stuff, especially in the latter volumes! And this first entry was deeeeeeffffffiiiinnnniiittteelllyyy the TAME one of the group! *nervous chuckle*

All I kept thinking about while I was watching this was that it had such scooby doo vibes with the creepy hotel owner, the ghost, the trap door, the 90s aesthetic 😆 Just a more adult version although a lot tamer than I was expecting for a yaoi. I went in to this expecting to cringe but I really liked it.

romaniablack

RIGHT?! Definite Scooby Doo vibes, hahaha!! It really was much more tame than I thought; I was expecting this to be cringe-y, too, but it’s actually adorable and I liked the manga a lot as well! :) A nice little nostalgic 90’s trip! :)
