It's time for a new show to react to, and this has a very interesting premise with lots of elements at play: an allegory to what it means to be a war veteran, re-integration into society post-war, ableism, identity, and in the midst of it all, the most unlikely love story?!

The animation is gorgeous, and I'm very curious to know more about our Ms. Violet and the man with emerald eyes...

Oh here we go 😭 the tears are yet to come, especially In the last few episodes - everybody is going to say Ep.10 but 9 was quite emotional for me, as well. The movie (the sequel not the spin-off) personally destroyed me and the whole audience during the screening 😀 there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. I had the pleasure of seeing it in the cinema during its limited release in the UK at the beginning of July. This is a special story and as you can see like with everything that they do, this project is KyoAni’s labour of love. Violet Evergarden’s VA is also AOT Mikasa’s which means that you’ll evidence amazing voice acting in the coming eps. Just to clarify and this is not a spoiler - I assume maybe it has to do with Netflix’s translation but quite a few people (including myself) were confused at the start - Violet is an orphaned human girl - her bluntness, doll-like look and steel arms are vital in creating that image of the “heartless tool” that she is perceived as and the show goes deeper in the exploration of these themes in the coming eps. I’m looking forward to your reactions and I really hope you do Fruits Basket after ☺️

Misty eyes, that's just how it starts. Kyoani kills the animation in this series and those time lapse scenes are gorgeous. Some VA notes for you... Hodgins - Takehito Koyasu aka Adam from Sk8 Benedict - Uchiyama Kouki aka Kei Tsukishima from Haikyuu, Ikuya from FREE Gilbert - Namikawa Daisuke aka BEST Boy Oikawa from Haikyuu

Oh, well you just told me that Major Gilbert is Daisuke...it's over! Hahahaha! I didn't recognize Uchiyama as Benedict at first, so that's interesting! And Hodgins is Koyasu?! WOW! Okay, interesting! And oooohhhh...the animation is gorgeous, but "how it starts," eh? Well.... *prepares tissues*

Ooohhhhhh boy...I don't think I was prepared for this! @_@ I'm so excited for the movie after the series, though; although your description is making me nervous! @_@ That's awesome you got to see it in the cinema, though! I will definitely have to listen for Mikasa with Violet, and the animation is just beautiful!! Thank you for the clarification on what she is! Hmmmm....I'm so intrigued! Thank you for the kind words, too, and yes, I definitely want to get to Fruits Basket at some point! :D

A great emotional journey. Worldbuilding is kinda flimsy in this but the character development, oh!

romaniablack

I can do a series if the character development is there, when the worldbuilding isn't 100% -- it's just better if there's both, haha, but I'm excited for this journey!

Violet Evergarden takes place in a fictional world that mostly resembles late 19th/early 20th century Europe (imo ~WW1 era). The places we see are an amalgamation of what a japanese Mangaka might see as "typically european". Leiden (city) in Leidenschaftlich (region) is no exception to that, though the names are distinctly german: Leiden: either plural noun that roughly translates to (multiple) ailments or as a verb, to suffer or to hurt; And Leidenschaftlich: passionate(ly). Though curiously enough, there is a place called Leiden in the Netherlands. Leidenschatlich is located at the central southern part of the continent and shares borders with most other regions on the continent. As such the region is quite strong economically and well connected through trade routes and general diplomacy.

SpaceMonkey!! Thank you for the patronage, and for the information! I can definitely see some "European inspiration" in the names and styles throughout! Interesting...I'll have to make not of this going forward with the reactions! :D

You're absolutely welcome. Dunno if i can keep it up, money is tight tbh. But i thought with the end of AoT S1 and especially Violet Evergarden, i'd chip in for a box of tissues at least :) Have you been informed about the "Special" yet ? It's an episode that fits inbetween ep 4 and 5. Some people suggest, that it is best watched at that point. Others stick to the original airing order. Personally, i think it doesn't really matter either way. But you might take that into consideration if any other patron feels strongly about it or something like that :) EDIT: Your dedication to reuploading stuff to different plattforms has been noted. Thank you for that !

romaniablack

Oh, that is alright! Any support is always welcome, and HA, I may have to take you up on investing in some tissues! ^^ Ooooh, I had not been told about the "Special" yet -- is it on Netflix as well? Hm, that is good to know! I've only watched episodes 1 and 2 at this point, so I'll need to investigate that! Thank you! And thanks about re-uploading -- I'm glad to have it all backed up now and hopefully things are well in place. I appreciate it!

SpaceMonkey

It is listed on Netflix as "Violet Evergarden: Special"; If you search for it a single item with a length of ~34-35min should come up (i guess the link would be different for a US user, so i'm not posting one, sorry); So it is completely seperated from the original anime. On other sites, you might find it as "episode 14", because of the airing chronology. I don't know of any site that has it listed as "4.5" or even 5 (pushing back the rest), but it's not impossible i guess. I am 99% sure, that the special doesn't spoil anything in the show, if that is a concern. But to echo my own sentiment on the matter: We all watched the series without the special when it first aired and managed to follow it properly, so it's far from a must imo, but ofc i highly recommend watching it at some point. Though you already have it on your MAL as 'plan to watch' under "Violet Evergarden: Kitto "Ai" wo Shiru Hi ga Kuru no Darou". That is the "Special" i was referring to. I guess i should have stated that first to avoid confusion. Well, anything beyond that is up to you :)

romaniablack

Oh awesome!! Yes, I had seen there was an OVA, so I wanted to watch it, but it's good to know that it's in between episodes 4 and 5. I'll figure out if I want to watch it in between the episodes or wait until the end, but that's so good to know it's on Netflix. Thank you so much for checking for me! :D
