I recognized it as soon as I saw the opening scene: a parody of the op of a legendary detective drama from the 1970s. The title is Kizudarake no Tenshi (傷だらけの天使), literally meaning something like the Wounded Angel. I googled it and quickly found a comparison video. https://youtu.be/MQGPgW4YgdY?si=9Y4nYK77G-rNh35Z

Absolutely love this episode, first i love Shimada's introduction its really special to me on how it was done because i love intro of the same type in anime, we spent the last episode focusing on Gotou and Rei possibly doing a match and we has the audience dont relly think that much about the Shimada match that comes before, i mean we know its coming but we glance over it a little like Rei totaly does in this episode. All Rei sees this episode is his match with Gotou and he underestimates Shimada, he is hyperfocused on problems, is victory and getting rid of this match to do is match with Gotou and doesn't even look at Shimada once, we as the audience dont see Shimada's face either, in the memory that Rei as of him his face is blurry and during the match we dont see his eye and the "camera" is focused on the Shogi board or Rei, then as Rei is losing is ground during the match he finally look at Shimada and we finally see Rei pay attention to him, wich is what he wanted Rei to do, then the whole atmoshere calm down, you almost feel like its a breath of air and i love Shimada's word to Rei, they are simple but they really calm things down and they give a certain aura to Shimada. ( i wish my english was better so i could explain me feelings about all of this better ) the anime did a wonderful job with his introduction, when i saw for the first time, i was as surprised as Rei. Now lets see what the issue of this will be. I saw that people on discord already told you who Shimada's VA was, Shinichirou Miki is an absolute legend.

Shimada is already on my short list of characters I am infatuated with in this series! And YES, Rei underestimating Shimada because he’s too focused on the future with Gotou is somethin I am DEFINITELY going to talk about next week (having watched the episode now). So a lot of what you say here is going to be echoed in my discussion next week, haha! But I really like the way the episode sets up the reveal through the cinematography and perspective with Rei. And I love his VA as well! Thank you so much for the kind words and comment!
