The episode was awesome. In my opinion, Rudeus is really in love with a person for the first time. As he himself described, all the little things Sylphie did made his heart beat faster. I don't know how it was described in the light novel the relationship between him and Eris in S1. But in S1 he only showed sexual interest than more romantic interest. It felt more like friends with benefits to me. The separation from Eris was so stressful for him because it was the first female person who showed him affection in his 50 years. These are my thoughts.

I think you are looking at it wrong. I know what comes down the line for the series and all so this is my take. No spoilers. This arc has the biggest focus being around Rudeus and Syphie relationship. The story has way less going on at this point in time so while we have little side story developments the main focus is the relationship they have right now. Eris and Rudeus had a genuine romance that was but also wasn't shown. It isn't just simply down to "friends with benefits" or "sexual interest". Yes it was more sexual in tone because it was his "growing phase" opposed to now he is more mature and experienced. That doesn't change the fact that they spent multiple years together and by the time of the teleportation incident nothing was more important than Eris to Rudeus. It was more of an immature romance because they were both growing up and learning things and going through a lot of stuff but over those years they really had a romance going on despite it being more in childish nature slowly developing over time. You have to remember a lot of stuff went down during the time he spent with Eris than the little developments we have right now. Knowing that you can even argue Rudeus may have more of a bond with Eris than sylphie could possibly ever catch up to. You can argue with certain things but it was a real romance. Sylphie is different opposed to Eris in the fact that she is way more girly and soft toned compared to Eris. The romance you have for a girl like Eris isn't the same romance you have with a girl like Sylphie. You can't push aside the romance with Eris and compare it to this one when everything is different in overall tone and setting and age etc.... It just isn't fair to say that Rudeus wasn't in love with Eris in my opinion. You are pushing everything aside because of a couple of things you see now in this arc where its main focus is the romance aspect

In the LN, Rudeus was more unsure of Fitz's gender and was hoping he'd turn out to be a girl. He also mentions that he might need to come to terms with the fact that he might be gay or bisexual. Apart from that, the episode was LN accurate.
