Yep, at the time, self-preservation was still priority one. His failure to complete the previous plan is actually more of a reason he'd think he'd do it better - I'm sure he's spent many hours turning in his head the options he missed the first time around that could have turned that situation differently, and he has far fewer distractions and loose ends to tie up this time. He's not weird - he's damaged and delusional.
