Casper Ghost

I'm an anime only but I was under the impression that Paul was knight of a fiefdom in the boonies, so instead of living in a castle and protecting a king he managed a village of peasant farmers and protected them from monsters under the orders of their king. IRL that was sometimes a reward for veteran knights who had proven their loyalty or were near retiring and had skills worth preserving by giving them longer to have a family and produce heirs.

That noble is paul's cousin not brother

I think its more that Paul thinks Rudeus is getting too dependent on having sylphie around, that its inhibiting the growth of his genius child, lack of growth that Rudeus is admitting to. He knows he can't forbid his son from seeing her everyday, Rudeus is too conniving for that. Paul is probably okay with Rudeus being loyal - he did tell him that its better off to find one ass to chase than multiple - but, he can't have an heir who is weak because of women, especially as the first born likely gets a lions share of the inheritance and has scheming relatives to deal with. But thats just my opinion. Also cousin marriages in a medieval period, especially for nobility was common. Only close relations - brother and sister for instance - was considered sinful. And this was basically universal the world over, except among pharoahs, who often married their sisters

to boil it down, paul thought rudy and silphie were becoming co-dependant.
