I think in Kawai's mind, she didn't take part in the bullying, but in Ishida's mind, she was still participating and wasn't seriously trying to stop Ueno from badmouthing Sahara. I would agree with Ishida though, and Kawai is playing the victim card way too fast for it to feel genuine.

no yeah shes super fake, she cries to make people feel bad for her so she doesnt have to face any consequences, even in the class ishida wasn’t accusing her of anything he just asked her if she said something to anyone about what happened in grade school and to put the heat off of her she tells the whole school loud as fuck that he bullied nishimiya even though she knows ishida’s been bullied and ostracized for that for 5 years now. Ueno’s a straight up bully but she never tries to act like she isnt, she doesnt hide it or try to act like a better person but stuff like kawai’s crocodile tears can ruin peoples lives just as much. god i forgot how good this movie was, they usually dont show just how bad bystanders are and how much damage they can end up doing too

My school made me do the paper cranes thing for a sick kid that Kawai did at the end. Apparently if you make 1000 of them it's a prayer to god to save the person who you're making them for and it originated in japan but I can't remember the specific story. A Sachiko or something like that.

Kawai did do some stuff. Like, during the choir thing, she purposefully breathed in early to get Nishimiya to start singing early and alone, to embarrass her. Plus she laughed along with all the jokes on Nishimiya, and honestly basically encouraged the bullying, more than just sitting there and listening to it I mean. Honestly that entire situation is fucked up. The entire class bullied her in various ways but somehow it's all lumped specifically on the MC. Plus, the teacher clearly knew the entire time the bullying was going on, but didn't care or do anything until the principal strolled in saying there was an issue, and he also kind of participated in it to a slight degree since he didn't try and help Nishimiya learn alternatively and just carried on teaching the class normally, and Ueno had to originally just start helping Nishimiya. And then he heaped all the blame on the MC. Tbh, I think Ueno gets overhated by people that watch this. Like, she was straight up the first one that started helping Nishimiya, writing notes for her as the teacher was refusing to change how he taught despite Nishimiya being deaf, and it was without being told to. However, as time went on, like the entire class was complaining about how they had to keep going out of their way to support Nishimiya, and it wasn't helped when they lost the choir competition, which some blame was laid at Nishimiya, because y'know she can't sing well as shown, so Ueno started getting aggravated since she seemed to be the only one helping Nishimiya with notes all the time, and then you had the teacher tell her to stop reading, but was fine with Nishimiya's reading(which y'know as adults, we get why, since ueno was being a typical kid not trying to do a reading with any form of emotion, and Nishimiya's speech issues can't be helped), but from Ueno's point of view(and the class's) this is just another thing that Nishimiya gets. Then the sign language teacher, saying they should learn sign language because it's easier for Nishimiya instead of writing in her notebook, and Ueno refuses saying it's easier for her to write in the notebook, and it's clear she's been getting aggravated having to constantly help Nishimiya, who also either didn't seem to realize she was causing issues, or was not caring that she was causing any issues, which didn't help the situation. Like, I'm not saying Ueno wasn't a bitch for the things she did, but the adults around didn't help the situation, the other kids didn't help, and Nishimiya herself didn't help, and I'm not saying Ueno doesn't deserve dislike/some hate. The manga probably gives off a better idea of her Point of view than the movie did...

In Japan up until relatively recently the schools were not required to accommodate deaf students. In fact, most deaf children ended up staying home with their parents. Japanese culture is very collectivist and thus social, so if you are perceived as not being social (not being able to communicate, for instance), your are deemed a blot by the general public. People very much looked down on the handicapped.

I took my language class for college on ASL and my professor was a deaf person. She explained how hard it is for deaf people to have a place in a hearing world, people don’t want to make an effort to match the person’s needs. At some schools, sign language is banned because they think it’s too distracting for the students around. I assume the problems that deaf people face in America is also the same for the deaf people in Japan.

Man, this movie is my number one of all animated movies I have seen, most because it hits deep and are very relatable to me. I was bullied a lot when growing up, but I have also been a bully, just to fit in with a gang of people in school. I am 28 now it it still think about the awefull things I said to people back then, and it is almost 20 years ago. Some things will allways stay with you and possibly haunt you long down the road.

you guys probably wont read this but Kawai is just as bad as Ueno, she was the actually the first to bully Nishimiya in the scene where the kids were in choir, she was faking singing so that Nishimiya would think it was time to start and that's why she started singing off queue. She never accepted responsibility for anything she did but just kept victimizing herself which is honestly accurate for a lot of women today.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the studio for this and Violet Evergarden is actually one of the few studios that actually keep all their work in-house and treat their animators really well. Kyoto Animation is a great example of how a studio can actually treat their employees with respect, pay them well, and put out quality works at the same time. They also do a lot to help new animators. The second season of Dragon Maid that's airing right now, if I remember correctly, is their first show to air since the arson attack on their studio in 2019 that killed 36 people and injured another 33.

Yeah, she was also just acting to be cute, kind and honest in front of they guy she likes. Acting to be the always "good" and "right" girl. She never admit anything, and run from the responsibilities of her acts. If you can speak japanese, there are many cultural (differences and stuff), "hidden tone?" vibe in it. Clannad is arguably Kyoto Animation's magnum opus. It's a bit long (two seasons with around 20 episodes each) but it's a damn masterpiece, at least in my eyes. And yes, though it may be a slice-of-life comedy show, it's more or less a facade to what the story is really about. You better bring the damn tissues when you do decide to watch it.

I really recommend reading the manga for this movie cuz it gives so such more development to the side characters and the background and makes some of the things that happen in the movie easier to understand plus the ending is different and doesnt just stop at the school festival

alright ngl as much of bitch Ueno I love her character more than the others simply because of how honest she is with herself.. literally everyone in that group acted as if they were innocent and played no part.. easily shifting the blame on to one person.. while Ueno at least tried to lessen it and make it seem like it was group thing not just Ishida doing all the bullying. I remember when the trailer was released everybody was so hyped about but I didn't know why untill I watched it myself. This movie really got to me, probably because I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of being bullied. Watching it stirred up so many emotions that I didn't know how to feel after it ended.

I feel like I should've cried to this cause I'm a pretty emotional person and it doesn't take a lot for me to cry(i still cry at certain scenes in ATLA😖), but I didn't cry at all. There have been scenes in one piece that aren't as sad as this that broke me. But I loved the characters, with some hate toward ueno and kawai, they're little shit heads, i really liked the mineta kid, I think that was giorno's VA, Kensho Ono (who is a very top tier VA btw). Regardless I absolutely loved this movie, it was amazing all the way through.

When I was a kid (I live on a mostly black island), in my (primary) school there was a dark-skinned black girl who was new to the school. In less than a week, she got bullied by almost the whole school for being darker than the others, the other kids were nicknaming her "Charcoal" and constantly mocking her. Once I stumbled upon her getting splashed by a water-filled balloon and laughed at while trying to go down the stairs. I remember her scared eyes looking for help. I did nothing. I was just a kid, it was the first time I saw someone getting discriminated in my life, so I just couldn't understand what was going on. The day after, she changed school.

I also remember a little boy who was introduced as a new student into my class. I remember his (step?) father always pampering him in public whenever he got the chance. And the boy was constantly shitting his own pants in class. Once he shitted more than the other days, there was semi-liquid shit all over his seat and I remember his frozen eyes asking me for help. He changed school right after that. Nowadays whenever I think about it, and when I think about the probability of a child shitting oneself on a daily basis, and I remember the unnerving presence of his parent, I can't shake the feeling that this kid was getting fucked in the ass by his own dad. Those didn't look like the eyes of someone who simply had a diarrhea.

Ueno still physically hit once or twice at the ferris wheel without anyone knowing if it wasn't for the little sister innovating on the go. Still sneaky shit, yeah, being passive is not good and all but she did while she was jealous & upset before and angry after the incident. Still a bad streak on my book she is willing to hurt someone knowing that person won't retaliate. In my preference, Kawai is easier to handle while Ueno to me would aggravate the situation, she is honest though. But that is just my opinion.
