"Morty! You gotta catch all the pokemon, Morty! You gotta catch 'em all! A complete set'll go for millions of schmeckles on the black market! You can start with that feralligator over there! I'll supervise."

Sifting through these reviews, I'd forgotten how grinding the mid-Johto "filler desert" (which I'd position as approximately the stretch between Goldenrod and Cianwood) legitimately was; it isn't merely the lack of "plot-important developments" (such as captures, evolutions, etc.) that weigh down these episodes, but more the stilted plotting, general shortage of well-defined (or energetically-written) character interactions and lack of tonal and locational diversity (surely at least 75% or more of this season's episodes must be set in generic forests) relative to Kanto. Given Takeshi Shudo's tragically-declining mental health and departure (at least from showrunning; I can find almost no information on his replacement), I have to wonder if the writing staff was in a state of upheaval or turbulence at the time (particularly when compounded with the axing of the GS Ball plotline, which, given that its intended conclusion was the original premise of the third movie, may have exacerbated the creative conflicts surrounding that film further), leading to the directionless feel of many of these episodes.

Thank you, Suede, for uploading all of these! It's really interesting to me going through Johto again. These episodes all aired in the states when I was 13, which was a really bad year for me. And maybe it's because those times were so bad, but I find, going through your reviews, that I honestly don't remember the majority of what happened in these episodes. Most of them I've only seen once, and that was over 20 years ago. And some, like The Grass Route and Trouble's Brewing, I don't even remember seeing the entire episode. I barely remember specifics about the Morty episodes. Funnily enough, I own all of Johto on DVD, yet I've never opened 2/3 of the boxes (Master Quest is the only one I've seen multiple times). So despite the fact they aired during a bad time in my life, I'm actually enjoying revisiting all these old episodes. :)
