Man I remember loving this series as a teenager, but aside from this first episode the ONLY thing I can remember about it is the ending.

I got 3 points, hooray! I think that qualifies me as average. I wonder what an anime version of Cat Valente's novel Space Opera would be like. I know it's been optioned and somebody's supposedly making a movie, but an anime would really fit the tone of a novel about humanity being forced to prove its right to exist via Intergalatic Eurovision.
