Charlie McGonigal used to be the FBI's top NYC spy-hunter. His high rank, access to classified intel, and alleged work for Oleg Deripaska (of Russiagate infamy) means the story of MGonigal's charges could be one of the worst scandals in FBI history. We spoke to Mattathias Schwartz, the reporter for Business Insider who broke the story.

I'm sorry, but this episode was tough to follow. I didn't really follow the Russian voter interference back in 2016 so I was really lost in listening to this. Anyone have a good summary of what Mattathias was trying to convey?

Just want to give a shout out to Travis’s infinite patience.

It’s like when a single cup of water is poured into a swimming pool. Like, what do you do? You try to not get too alarmed by it because if you declare it’s alarming, you’re just giving that cup of water more power

This episode is aging super well now that Trump said his peace plan for Ukraine would be to let Russia take it. https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-news-edits-out-donald-trump-saying-he-mightve-let-russia-take-over-parts-of-ukraine

To be fair, this episode did a shit job at explaining what happened. It just waved away everything that DID happen by discussing the parts that were debunked.

Did Jake drop a McGarnagle at the end because the whole episode I could only think of McGarnagle

Seriously under-discussed (and under-investigated) part of/intersection with Russiagate is the role of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Israel in supporting Trump during the 2016 campaign and then the Obama-Trump transition. But I suppose it’s harder to get many people in Washington or the media to care.

Fascinating episode 🙌 But why did the DNC rebuff the request by the FBI to look into the servers?

Jim Lippard

Mattathias is correct that there is DOJ naming of individual GRU officers involved in the DNC hack, that's in the Mueller Report, pp. 38ff--which describes the hack in substantial detail. CrowdStrike identified the X-Agent malware on DNC servers; which is known GRU malware. The Dutch AIVD had also hacked the GRU in 2014, and monitored their activities via hacked cameras, and shared that intel with the US when the GRU hacked US State Dept employees in Nov 2014.

Jim Lippard

The DNC's infrastructure was mostly cloud-based virtual servers, BTW. CrowdStrike discussed this--they never had physical possession of servers because it was unnecessary and not really feasible. https://www.crowdstrike.com/blog/bears-midst-intrusion-democratic-national-committee/
