From Plato to Heinrich Himmler — we track the intertwined myths of the lost city of Atlantis and the 'Aryan' race by way of the 'Theosophy' movement and into the creation of the Thule Society and the Nazi party.

I did my two undergrad dissertations in Uni on both the Theosophists & the Indus Valley Civilization (the Indian culture the "Aryans" supposedly invaded) so this and Liv's two Hyperborea episodes have been like catnip to me. In the latter case one of the main reasons the whole Invasion hypothesis took off was because Max Muller, who edited and contributed to the first major Sanskrit translations in English - the Sacred Books of the East series - was a fan of those scholars who wanted to prove the Aryans were the people spreading out from Noah's Ark. So Muller interprets the stuff in the Vedas as being about these invaders and then that's what subsequent books and archaeology take as the truth until recently. But at least it makes more sense than the people who think the early Indians were wiped out by nuclear bombs and flying castles...

Very nice episode, thanks! Some of the other Liv's episodes where a bit boring to me but this was very well prepared and very cool topic. Only complain is that you haven't covered Graham Hancock, the latest of the new wave of atlantists/aryanists

Mac-something

Liv does an excellent job of outlining in the episode how it has been made a foundational part of both Theosophical/ New Age and White Nationalist thinking- but I need to point out that the idea that a group of proto Indo-Europeans invaded/ migrated into India during the Bronze Age, bringing their language with them is still taken seriously by historians. It is NOT just a myth invented by 19th century racists. Yes it has been USED as a prototype of the ‘Ancient Alien’ theory and there has been a LOT of debate over debate the extent to which it reflects historical events but to the best of our PRESENT knowledge the migration was a historical event. The case for which has recently been reinforced by the findings of genetic studies attempting to track historical human migrations through genetics markers have been consistent in finding a group (groups?) related to Central Asians/ Iranians/ Europeans appearing in India around this time. As for how ‘white’ those proto Indo-Europeans were in appearance- well we don’t know, even today appearance-wise we don’t have much to go off other than some infamous lines in the Vedas characterising the Aryans as paler than the people they ruled over. Which might be more of a reflection of rich folks not having to work in the hot sun like the peasants than anything else. Similarly the extent to which the proto Indo-Europeans were responsible for Indians later cultural/ social/ technological achievements remains extremely contentious. The Indian sub continent had already produced an advanced urban civilisation along the Indus River by the time the new arrivals came down through the mountains, even today reconstructing the past is still bloody hard work! For better or worse there are a LOT of politics around this period of Indian history* but misunderstandings, even accidental ones, only lead to further confusion- which then plays into the hands of groups with agendas such as modern day Hindu nationalists. *In India itself it has become a proxy for wider debates over the caste system.

I really enjoyed this episode - I've gotten into this quite a bit at Heathen History. Guido von List is a character and a half, who faked being a nobleman in addition to all of this. I will say that I was concerned about one particular thing - Runes do not equate racist/Neo-Nazi affiliations. Runes, especially the Elder Futhark, are very much a part of modern Heathen (Germanic Pagan) practices.

Another interesting & informative podcast! Be safe and well!

Liv had the best comment about that guy going to jail because he watched the mypillow marathon, telethon. It foments their belief that it's real because why else would they silence the truth. I paraphrased and became Travis by the end

How do you send something to the podcast crew? Do they have an email address? Has anyone noticed the song “God We Need You Now” by Struggle Jennings is near the top of Spotify’s Top 50 Viral songs playlist? I just heard it and there are pretty obvious Q themed references. Surprised to see this topping charts
