I do hope that his reaction is different--or that there's a whole different scene--if your MC is indifferent all the way into Step 4 compared to being friends or lovers along the way. This was something 13-year-old Cove freaked out about if told in Step 2, that the bribe could've screwed up what you two had, so I wonder if an indifferent 23-year-old Cove could or would be able to realize the potential that was lost.
