The special Our Life 2 poll of the day is-

How important is the MC's family connection compared to personal background customization? The more prominent a role the MC's parents/possible siblings have, the less flexible the game can be about the MC's backstory.

It's another 1-5 scale. 1 means "I want the MC's family to be a major part of the story, even if that means the MC has one default family/living situation.", 3 means you want a balance between both types, 5 means "I want the option to choose from different upbringings/family structures for the MC, even if that means the family's role/screen presence is majorly reduced.", 2 and 4 mean you're leaning one way but aren't entirely committed to it.

Poll ends February 29th!

hmmm. This is interesting. I like how is OL: 1 our family is actually part of the MC's life, adding to the presence of feeling like a real person, in a real family. I also enjoy that it's canon that both Lizzie and MC are adopted/not blood-related, as in, it's not awkward that my MCs are phenotypically, racially, and ethnically different from their parents. My immersion isn't broken and I don't feel like the odd duck of the family when I see Lizzie, Mommy, and Mom's sprites. Unless something like the adopted story line will be repeated, how could family sprites and a set-in-stone set-up work? I want the perks of a real family dynamic and relationships in the story, but I'm stuck b/c if the fam is blood-related and all look drastically different from the MC, I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

I think it would really depend on what age we see the main character as the most. You would expect more family scenes from a younger or child main character, and less of them from an older or adult one. One thing you might consider though is having a blended family with step parents (and step-siblings if need be). The other, biological parent could be unseen so even if the main character's race doesn't match their one biological parent, it leaves open the possibility for the other parent to be the same race without necessarily adopting. You could also have them being raised by a non-parent relative, like the grandparents or aunts/uncles. Or you can always go the adopt route again.

It's okay. The OL series is made to be immersive and customizable. We wouldn't use a system that would push people into doing things a certain way. Like, for example, if there were blood related family members and they were a big part of the story we could give them multiple different designs so that they matched whatever the player had decided for their own MC! The player comes first, everything else is just there to accommodate them, haha.

Yeah, there are a lot of things that really depend on other elements. But there's not really an effective way to do every detail one at a time, come to a decsion, infom everyone on the decsion, and then move on to another detail. That might've kind of worked if we were only doing Patreon polls, but there's also all the KS backers. For them things absolutely had to be done all together, all at once. So we just have to do our best, aha. Still, we'll be sure that however the family structure works, it makes sense with a custimizable MC!

okie dokie, sounds good to me. Reminds of what Dragon Age 2 tried to execute by having face presets matching to the skintone of your family. The game sucked, but I appreciated Bioware's effort to make the PC feel included that way. I trust whatever decision you all come up with creatively and logistically. :)
