“It’s abandoned,” Natalie shook her head and looked back.

Gavin followed her gaze to the compound deep in Central China that they had gone to so much trouble to recon.

“Looks like we missed by a day, from what I could tell. Banana peels in the trash still recognizable.”

“They only set up here a few weeks ago. This is not normal,” Natalie looked again at the compound.

“Somehow, Gavin replied, “They got tipped off.”

“Yeah…” Natalie shook her head again and looked back one last time. “Signal the rest of the team. Let’s get out of here.”

Gavin nodded and looked off to the north where one of the marksmen was keeping watch.

Natalie continued. “We gotta backtrack, now. And we ought to keep an eye on Agent Vals. It had to be me pretending to be her that tipped them off. They will think she’s behind this. Agent off the grid… all that.”

Gavin looked at Natalie. “Yeah, you’re right about that. I guess we owe her enough to keep an eye out for her.”
