This show is considered Fox's biggest new show. They've been really promoting it and giving it a lot of ad space, including the coveted Superbowl ad runs. I'm having a rollicking good time with it, so I'm very pleased. Fox has a tendency to prematurely cancel shows I like, so I'm super wary. For this episode, I loved the exploration of a child killer that Malcolm can relate too. I loved that we brought back Malcolm's staunch belief, showcased in the first episode, that nobody's born broken, somebody breaks them. He then follows that with his strong belief that because nobody's born broken, everyone can and should have the chance to get better and grow. Even if you do the most horrible things, Malcolm will always believe you deserve the chance. I honestly think it's why he still craves a connection to his father and still visited him for so many years after Martin was arrested. I think there's a part of Malcolm that thinks Martin can be saved or changed for the better. He's thinking that somehow if he can just get through to him, he'll become the father that Malcolm thought he was before the horrible truth cam out when he was a child. Another thing I liked was the very slight acknowledgment that Malcolm is a masochist or is very close to being a masochist. I don't know if he is an active one who would say seek out an S&M partner but he def flirts very heavily with danger and pain. I'm interested to see how they expand on this undercurrent, if they ever do. It might be too risque for Fox to let happen but we'll see.
