This episode is often rated low. You can imagine why. What the Doctor does in this episode seems almost malicious and it's understandable that Carla felt betrayed. The way I see it, though, it was just a misunderstanding caused by two factors: Twelve's social and emotional ineptitude, and the unique relationship this Doctor and Clara share. Up till now, the companions we've seen in NuWho always look up to the Doctor and almost idolize him as a God. And he practically is one, to be fair. But this Doctor sees Clara as his equal, he doesn't see her as another human. That's not entirely his fault either, since she sees herself the same way. In fact, she has even patronized him in some occasions, calling herself his teacher or often reprimanding him, etc. The problem is, the Doctor is an incredibly intelligent Alien who has lived two millennia and has beyond human abilities and reasoning. She is not his equal, she is still a fairly young human school teacher. As much as she would hate to admit it, "do not lump me in with the rest of the silly little humans", it is the reality. This was bound to cause trouble eventually, and that was here. From the Doctor's perspective, holding Clara in very high regard, this was just meant to be a silly little outing with a very simple decision to make. Clara was going to have her own companion, Courtney, and was meant to teach her and guide her to make the right decision, making her important in the process, by "saving humanity from itself". The problem was as easy as 1+1=2 to him and, due to holding Clara in such high esteem, he thought it would be as simple for her. This is how he was 'respecting' her in his eyes. He was treating her as a peer, as his stand in, because he never doubted for a second that she would make any other choice, and didn't realize that it would even be as difficult as it was for her. He pushed her beyond her limitations without realizing, believing her to be more than what she really is. This is what Danny had warned her about. In other words, the Doctor wasn't trying to put Clara through some arduous trial by fire. He wasn't being a bad friend, callous or patronizing. He simply misjudged Clara's capacity and, in doing so, hurt her terribly. A very simple mistake we all have either made, or experienced.

Holy shit!! I'd never considered it from the perspective that Dadundudun put forward! Yes, this is exactly it. This is what he meant when he said he respected her. Mind. Blown. Also something Jeremy said made me think of River Song. She absolutely could be trusted to make these kind of decisions, and I think that the Doctor has Clara on the same pedestal as River.
