"Oh my darling little Starlight.....you have yourself a good long cry. Mummy will be here as long as you need......Always."

I already talked about Glory, Starlight Glimmer's deceased mom, back in this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/42166446 , but have some bullet points to recap

-Glory was a kind, loving, utterly brilliant unicorn, with the extraordinarily rare ability to grant wishes

-She loved Starlight as much as a mother could ever love her foal. She was treasured by her husband Firelight, and she was a respected teacher in her village.

-Unbeknownst to Glory and her family, the strain of her wish-granting magic was causing damage to the magical pathways within her horn and cerebral cortex. Following a holiday festival where Glory cast magic finale fireworks for Starlight and the neighborhood foals, she collapsed suddenly from a brain bleed. Although Firelight and Starlight remained at her bedside, Glory never regained consciousness, and died a few days later.

-Her abrupt, unexpected death factored heavily into Starlight's unhealthy and obsessive attachment style (*cough*Sunburst*cough*), as well as the surly rebellious anger that plagued her teen years. Firelight has never gotten over losing his wife, and spent much of Starlight's childhood spoiling her and drowning her with love so she wouldn't be too poorly affected by the loss of her mother.....this did not work. As Starlight is the last fragment of his family, Firelight greatly dreads accepting that she's grown up and doesn't need him as much anymore.

Starlight meanwhile acts out her longing for a mother by dutifully, almost desperately, playing the role of a mother herself. First to her cult followers, and later to Midnight Abyss. Much like her father before her, Starlight coddles and controls her daughter because she's terrified of being abandoned. Poor Glory remains a ghost that haunts her small family...... and it is after her that Midnight Abyss (Morning Glory) is named.

-Starlight is deeply guilty over the fact that as the years go by, it's becoming harder and harder to remember much about her mother.....but at least she can remember Glory's voice. Sweet and comforting, like a warm drink on a cold winter night.

(In my head, Glory sounds like Moominmamma) Like Moominmamma, Glory was could also be savage af

😭She's so pretty! Really love this!

ApofisNecros

I REALLY like her mane!... And face, eyes, hooves, ears. You just drew super pretty unicorn.

>:) Ps. Glory’s unusual death feeds right into Starlight’s “exceptionalism is evil” dogma. Starlight may have been manipulative and tyrannical, but it’s entirely possible she truly believed she was saving her cult members from the cruel consequences of magical gifts.

Love how you coloured the hooves to match her mane! 🌟

owlcoholik

Dang you’re the last person I’d expect some cute baby Starlight from XD there’s my favorite little purple pony

y'all keep thinking i hate Starlight when really i just hate how her character is framed by the narrative. In any case, every villain was a baby once, and I imagine young Starlight was a very sensitive little girl, who often leaned on her mother for comfort against the (often unthinkingly mean) other schoolchildren.

I DID NOT ASK TO BE TAKEN ON THIS FEELS TRIP >:U Seriously though, this is lovely <3

It would also be so cool to get to know more about Starlights and Sunsets relationship and how they came to be in the first place ^^

SmilesPerHour

I've never been so happy to have my heart broken. This headcanon is just so tragic, and yet... so meaningful. I honestly don't have the words for it, but I really admire the tale you've woven about Starlight's family matters, Lop. Well done.

I really love the backstory you gave to Starlight

Dragon Turtle

It's fascinating how you tied her signature power, which I would assume is tied to her Cutie Mark and therefore her Destiny, to her highly disturbing death. Since the death was so out-of-nowhere from an uncommon cause, Sire's Hollow is kind of rural, and given Equestria's technology level at the time, did they ever determine what actually happened to her?

lopoddity

Sire’s Hollow strikes me as fake-rural, like one of those Hallmark holiday movie small towns (which are nonetheless extremely lavish and well-maintained). It’s a private community for wealthy unicorn families who’d like to play at simple living. Still, it is pretty isolated, meaning Glory was attended to by the resident physician and nurse. Upon her death, said physician recommended Glory’s body be sent out for autopsy. Firelight, grief-stricken, at first furiously refused, but changed his tune when the doctor said the whatever’d killed Glory could be genetic, and thus potentially deadly to young Starlight as well. And so medical examination reveals the damage to the brain and horn. As Starlight doesn’t seem to have inherited Glory’s abilities, she’s determined to not be at risk....though Firelight watched her like a hawk for any sign of trouble, and might’ve unthinkingly discourages her from heavy magic use through his constant infantilization (“Don’t you think that spell is a little too advanced for you, sweetie pie?”). So between Sunburst leaving and her dad’s constant babying, Starlight grows up very doubtful and shaky in her abilities, which is why she never followed Sunburst to Celestia’s school for gifted unicorns.
