As the person without a username already pointed out, Steve Kiziak plays himself in this episode, and he's Duchovny's "stand-in" on the series. Aside from that, this is an episode that is rarely ends up on anyone's favorite episodes list, most likely because Mulder and Scully aren't much in it. The whole episode is presented from the MOTW's point of view. I personally don't think it's that bad, but it's not one of my favorites either. Just like you though, I've always wondered about what "exactly" the antagonist is. There is no explanation for it, as the episode just sends with his death. I don't find the episode to be horrible, and I still enjoyed your reaction. Take care.

I really like this one. It was an attempt to do an X-File from the "monster's point of view." So Mulder and Scully are kind of the antagonists. He's kind of like Tooms, if Tooms were uncomfortable with being a killer mutant.
