In my opinion, Jack is totally soulless, as derived from the transcripts that were supposed to be his inner consciousness dialogs ... first, outside the cabin, Lucifer: You know this torment that you're feeling right now? It's just a reflex. It's just a habit, man. It's -- It's an echo from when you actually could feel something, when it mattered. But you know what? The sooner you give up this little fantasy, the sooner this phantom pain can go away. Jack: No. Shut up. Lucifer: Mnh-mnh. Not gonna. And you know what, Jack? It's not gonna work. You know it's not gonna work. You know it. ... and second, in the bunker scene, Lucifer: Um .. Just. What do you want? Forgiveness? You want gratitude for bringing Mommy back? Why? So you can call this dump home again? So you can ease your guilt? But you don't have guilt anymore, do you, Jack? Admit it. You don't feel anything anymore. Jack: Shut up. ... as he categorized his loss/pain as a phantom, meaning the loss he's feeling is actually not real ... ... and as long as he didn't cause any untoward incident, even while soulless, Cas, Dean, and Sam were okay to move forward (just like Donatello) as there's nothing can be done about Jack's soullessness. That's why Dean forbade Jack from hunting (a difficult undertaking for Jack) in the Don't Go in the Woods episode but okayed him to go for a supply run (an easy one for him), and him at least agreeing to not use his powers without permission, or supervision, I guess ... as a precautionary measure. ... unfortunately, Jack did display disturbing behavior and this was kept quiet by Cas. He admitted that he left before making sure that Jack understand that his action towards Felix was wrong. I supposed in an emergency situation like the previous episode, if we look at it, they won't be able to plan for contingencies for every scenario but at least there was an option to plan for such a thing, and should there be any bad outcome from that endeavors then so be it, at least they would be aware of such a risk in including Jack who was a high-risk individual according to Cas should he shared his findings, and as a consequence of this hypothetical scenario, there's no blame to fall on anyone ... ... now it was too late ... Jack did use his powers excessively without Mary's okay (in fact overriding her instructions after promising Sam and Dean that his powers are not to be misused) on Nick, and thought that his action was justified based on who Nick was, but Mary told him no it was not ... him not understanding why that was, was just like him killing Felix, he wouldn't understand that that was not okay behavior ... But, that's hindsight for ya ... and Cas falls victim to that ... I felt so sad for the whole duration of this episode. Tears kept falling down my cheeks on my first watch, and I kept feeling that we lost our chance to have a woman's character's POV (other than Rowena's) on this show. I wish that we had a full episode of Mary's POV on her character's return from the dead and/or about anything else (not just the bits and pieces mentioned here and there by her and by other characters - namely her sons) just like we have Cas's and Bobby's centric episodes. We missed our chance in Lebanon as I've touched a little in my comment over there ... Come on, show, this is the matriarch of the series, the origin of the show's man pain ... what a wasted window of opportunity .... grrr ...

See, I interpret it differently. I think if Jack was completely soulless, then he wouldn't have been torturing himself and Lucifer's words would have had no impact on him. I don't think he's feeling no guilt, as Lucifer says, he's just feeling less than he knows he should. I mean, can you imagine Soulless Sam having this kind of angst, whatever the situation? I can't quite imagine him even conjuring a mental Lucifer, but if he did, his reaction would have been irritation. Maybe hostility. Not the anguish we saw from Jack as he remembered Mary's kindness to him.

Personally I'm glad Mary is gone. I never cared for her second iteration. The Destiel separation/divorce is real and it hurts. But Cas really should've brought his concerns to both their attention. I think soulless Jack is interesting, but I do understand that they may need to kill him. But how? The only solution I can see is God restoring his soul, and even then like you said, how do Sam & Dean get past this?
