The whisperers of the gales are an ancient order tucked far away beyond the clouds where they hone their relationship with the winds. Their monasteries are dotted with everblooming cherry blossom trees that they use to practice their craft. The whisperers dare not try to control the gales themselves, they merely know the magical language to negotiate with the earthly forces that are behind them. The whisperers’ famous hand fans have become a symbol of their craft. This fan is but one of their mighty tools.

Design notes from Matthew:

I love spring for several reasons, but one of them is the cherry blossoms that are planted in my area. Several roads here are lined with them and when they bloom each year they create a beautiful cacophony of swirling pink petals against azure blue skies. If you find I’m waxing poetic about it, well then you’re right. I find it to be beautiful. I wanted to create something that invoked those feelings while also giving you something useful to use it with.

The actual design of the mechanics was rather difficult. I went through several iterations of this where it created a nonstop aura, one where it triggered on reaction, one where it had a counterattack property and all sorts of other options. I found myself doing a lot of iterating and feeling like I wasn’t getting very far. That’s because I was falling into the trap of overcomplication. When in doubt, go back to simple. That’s what I did and the item was better for it.

There’s a lot of precedent for cool auras in both 5E and PF2E such as spirit guardians and I definitely didn’t want to step on the toes of those kinds of spells. Instead I decided to focus this aura on something more defensive and allow the offensive side to be a bit more of a product of result rather than outright extreme damage. Overall it creates an interesting mix of offense and defense for this one.

It’s wonderful getting to take the time to create something that was inspired by something I enjoy in my real life. I think this is something I’d love to do more regularly. There’s a lot of inspiration in the world around us if we just take the time to actually notice it.
